I’ve represented not the art lover, the collector, but the one who buys and sells art as he does for stock quotes. It doesn’t matter what’s represented: canvases are empty frames, statues are shapeless matter. They mean money, not colours or lines. The art dealer has been put in a frame himself, but he can’t be contained: he’s a fake. In his hand there’s a painting with the names of the most overrated contemporary artists because that’s what he actually sells: a signature, not an artwork. Last but not least, his face. I’ve painted one of the most famous art dealers, Charles Saatchi, because I think he embodies the above.
